Interleukin 6 (IL-6) ialah interleukin yang bertindak sebagai sitokin proradang serta miokin antiradang. Molekul ini dikodkan oleh gen IL6 dalam badan manusia.^[4]

Di samping itu, osteoblas merembeskan IL-6 untuk merangsang pembentukan osteoklas. Sel otot licin dalam tunika media pada banyak saluran darah juga menghasilkan IL-6 sebagai sitokin proradang. Peranan IL-6 sebagai miokin antiradang dikawal atur melalui kesan perencatannya terhadap TNF-α dan IL-1, serta pengaktifan IL-1ra dan IL-10.

Terdapat beberapa bukti awal bahawa IL-6 boleh digunakan sebagai penanda keradangan untuk jangkitan COVID-19 yang teruk dengan prognosis yang buruk, dalam konteks pandemik koronavirus yang lebih luas.^[5]

Superkeluarga protein

Interleukin ialah ahli utama superkeluarga IL-6 (Pfam PF00489) yang turut merangkumi G-CSF, IL23A dan CLCF1. Versi virus IL6 ditemui dalam herpesvirus berkaitan sarkoma Kaposi.^[6]
